LUZ CASAL, Pop singer
The well-known Spanish pop singer Luz Casal supports Fair Trade and the celebration of the World Fair Trade Day. Casal has been an important figure in Spanish pop music since the early 1980s. Being a child, she took up studying piano, music theory and ballet, leading up to her joining a rock group called Los Fannys. After leaving the band, Luz sought out opportunities to study voice and opera in Madrid. In 1982 she released her first solo debut entitled "El Rock de una Noche de Verano". The release was followed by a national tour and the second release took place only two years later. Her career has been fruitful and succesful and we can now enjoy her last album in 2009 named "La Pasión".
"Let's recognise the importance of the work of all people. Against smallmindedness and greed, solidarity and justice. That will dignify us." |

ARTETA, Opera singer
Arteta is a Member of the Board of the Orfeó Catalá-Palau from Music Foundation, Artist in Residence of Cadaqués Symphony Orchestra, Member of the Board of the Winterthur Foundation and Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Cadiz "When the World Fair Trade Organization proposed to me to support this celebration, World Fair Trade Day, I did not doubt it," says Arteta, "This initiative is a way of supporting the craftsmen and the most vulnerable people of the Southern Hemisphere, as well as a good way of working for justice in the commercial world. Therefore, it is one of the causes that I truly respect and value. We cannot forget that we are speaking about a collaboration North and South, so without the consumers of the North, this project would be unviable. The progress of the life for the poorest people is put in our hands and by purchasing products in the shops of Fair Trade we are taking action against injustices and poverty. The World Fair Trade Day tries to sensitize and to alert consumers to this unjust trade system and promotes a change for the better. For me, every day I act against poverty and support the craftsmen and impoverished people: and you? Remember that the curtain has risen and the band is playing for the World Fair Trade Day, now you need to take to stage." The organizing efforts of the European office of the World Fair Trade Organization are well underway. Celebrities from diverse fields and from across the world are being contacted to help drum up support for the global celebration of Fair Trade, World Fair Trade Day 2010. The event will be celebrated around the world on May 8th, 2010. |
